How Do I Determine if a
Student Needs Assistive Technology?
1. Identify Areas of Need
-
Reading, writing,
communication, daily living, access, etc.
2. IEP Team Meeting
3. Complete Assistive Technology
Checklist
-
For students
who continue to be unsuccessful, after strategies, accommodations,
and modifications have been attempted
-
The checklist must be completed
during an IEP meeting
-
Upon receipt of
the AT Checklist, the AT Specialist will set up a consultation with
the school team
-
Parents are
always invited and encouraged to participate
-
The AT Specialist may recommend
a trial use of assistive technology
4. Develop an Action Plan
-
If team
determines AT is needed, focus is on the function and options of the assistive technology, not
names of devices or software
-
Team determines
trial use of AT
5. Follow-Up
6. Integrate the
Assistive Technology into the School
Day and at Home
