The Roswell Beacon on February 15, 2007 Fulton Charter School Accepting Applications Connected Academy, an Alpharetta charter high school scheduled to open this August, is accepting application until Feb. 28. Acceptance notifications will be mailed by Mar. 15. “Connected Academy is filling a need that has been felt for some time. The response from students and parents is very encouraging,” said Dr. Susan Caster, principal. “Our phones are ringing non-stop with questions from parents who say this school will be a perfect fit for their child.” According to Dr. Caster, Connected Academy is ideal for juniors and seniors who are self-starters, highly motivated, and who welcome educational flexibility and real-world integration into the classroom. The school offers many of the same curriculum options as traditional high schools but differs in how instruction is delivered. Classes are individualized to students’ interests and geared toward “connecting” the classroom to the real world. The unique learning environment is designed for students who are high achieving but may not find the atmosphere of a traditional high school to be the right fit for their learning style. The new school, located within the Milton Center at 86 School Drive in Alpharetta, is tuition-free and open to all rising high school juniors and seniors living within Fulton County School System attendance zones. It is publicly funded and will operate according to the terms of a charter (or contract) that has been approved by the Fulton County Board of Education and the Georgia Board of Education. Connected Academy promotes student engagement and self exploration and “offers a small, personalized environment where students will feel appreciated for their individual differences,” Dr. Caster said. Its curriculum meets state requirements for obtaining a college preparatory diploma and features internships as a key component. In addition, college and career counseling will be offered to all students. Student application packets are available at www.connectedacademy.org. In addition to the application, students must complete a short essay, provide letters of reference from a parent and another adult, and sit for a brief interview.
