Banneker
High
School
put on it’s first ever Hovercraft Competition April 5, 2008 to
start off Spring Break. In spite of the rainy weather, it
did not discourage Westlake and Chattahoochee High and dozens of
spectators to witness and participate in the 1st
Annual Hovercraft Competition. The judging categories were
1st, 2nd & 3rd place for
“Performance and Speed” and one trophy for “Best Design”. The
speed competition was an 80 ft. runway. Banneker entered
two hovercraft teams into the competition. Each hovercraft was
timed and the crafts were seeded based on their fastest
time.Chattahoochee High broke out of the starting gate with the
fastest time.
Westlake
was second and Banneker had the third fastest time. Banneker
moved into the second round against Chattahoochee. Meanwhile,
Westlake beat Banneker# 1 in the first round and Banneker #1
hovercraft had to go head to head with Banneker #2 hovercraft.
in the second round . In the semi finals it was Westlake vs.
Chattahoochee.
Westlake
surprisingly beat Chattahoochee with a fantastic run.
Chattahoochee moved into the second round and beat Banneker once
again. In the finals it was
Westlake
against Chattahoochee to run the length of the basketball court
and return. In spite of the speed of the Westlake mini
craft, it developed steering problems and Chattahoochee won 1st
place in Speed and performance and also Best Design. Westlake
came in 2nd place and Banneker came in 3rd
place. Banneker had hoped to win a trophy in their stellar
event which was the obstacle course but the judges vetoed the
idea since no schools were informed that they were to drive
their hovercrafts through an obstacle course.
During the
award ceremony, while trophies being awarded, all participants
were treated to pizza and cokes and team members and coaches
were given an award certificate for participating in the event.
