November 2004:
Trojan Fall Sports
The football team ended up with a
3-7 record (1-3 region). The team has fought hard through a
lot of setbacks. We are all proud of our Banneker Trojans. The varsity volleyball team ended up with
a record of 9-19. The JV volleyball team ended up with a 6-11
record. Both teams fought hard in a very competitive region and
we are all proud of them at Banneker. Banneker Boys rank 9th in
AAA in Cross Country. The Banneker Team believes they can pull
into the top 3 and maybe number #1 if everyone steps up.

Excellence On the Gridiron
After a fantastic
senior campaign, Carlos Thomas was selected to play in the GACA
Georgia North/South Classic All-Star Football Game.
Despite having his season shorten three games by injury, Carlos
gained over 1000 all-purpose yards and led the team in scoring
with 8 touchdowns. Carlos will be a part of the talented
North squad coached by Buford High School's head football coach,
Dexter Wood. A standout at a number of positions including
wide receiver and defensive back, Coach Wood has yet to
determine what position Carlos will play. It is likely he
will also be used as a kick returner, a position he excelled at
during the season, returning two for touchdowns. Because
of his tremendous athletic ability, Carlos has already received
a scholarship offer and has verbally committed to continue his
playing career at Georgia Tech next year. Rated by several
publications as one of the top 50 recruits in the nation, Carlos
is still being courted by the likes of Ohio State, LSU, Purdue,
Ole Miss, and Mississippi State. The game takes place in
Columbus, GA at the Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, December 21,
2004 at 2:00 p.m. Congratulations Carlos on a well
deserved honor. If Carlos holds to his commitment to
Georgia Tech we can all look forward to another great
Banneker Alumni matchup in the Georgia / Georgia Tech
state rivalry game next year. Greg Blue at defensive back
for Georgia and Carlos Thomas at defensive back for Georgia
Tech.
Alumni
We always love to see
Banneker Alumni come back to work for their former
school. CeCe Johnson the proud daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Alonza Johnson graduated from Banneker High with
the proud class of 1998. Ms. Johnson graduated
with a 4.54 grade point average and was a member of 13
organizations while at Banneker. She furthered her
education at the University of Georgia where she majored
in Business Education. After graduation Ms.
Johnson found her dream job at Banneker High School
where she teaches Business classes. She is currently the
Student Government Sponsor and a member of the band
staff. Ms. Johnson is working on a Master of Arts
degree in Educational Leadership from the University of
Cincinnati.

SADD (Students Against
Disruptive Decisions)
The members of SADD
(Students Against Disruptive Decisions) visited the Christian
City Assistant Living Facility located in Union City on Saturday
December 4, 2004. The SADD members provided many services
like reading stories, basic household chores, song and dance,
and basic exercise activities. The volunteers from SADD
said they received a lot of enjoyment from the people they
visited. We are proud of all the SADD members and the great
volunteer work they do for the community. The young people
that are a member of SADD show their concern for their future and
the future of others. Keep up the good work!

Academics
In Complimentary of
Phillips Electronics and the Atlanta Hawks, Banneker
students are fortunate to receive 800 Basketball
tickets to the Atlanta Hawks / Memphis Grizzlies game on
December 8, 2004 at the Phillips Arena. Students that have performed
high in areas of attendance, academics, and behavior
will receive the tickets.
Athletes
Banneker has graduated many great
athletes. Among the most recent are Darius Watts, a wide
receiver for the NFL Denver Broncos; Greg Blue, a strong safety
for the University Of Georgia Bulldogs; and Lavon Thomas, a wide
receiver for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. When
you see these and other great Banneker Alumni athletes on TV,
and hear about them on the radio remember them as Trojans first.
Georgia and Georgia Tech both
played outstanding in this years state rivalry game. Even
more outstanding was the play of two former Banneker students.
Greg Blue for Georgia and Lavon Thomas for Georgia Tech were
both in the plays and on top of their game from kickoff to final
play. We are all very proud of these two former
Banneker Trojans.
Both men represented themselves, their school, and their formal
high school (Banneker) exceptionally well.

CARING IS THE KEY!

The last three years
behind the walls of the clinic at Banneker High School seem to
have gone by like a whirlwind. In fact, considering all
that has been accomplished, it seems more like five years have
elapsed. It all began with the hiring of Ceola Johnson, a
clinic assistant who apparently believes that caring is the key.
Ms. Johnson hit the
ground running by organizing the clinic; stocking it with
first-time, first-aide products and equipment such as wheel
chairs, a blood pressure monitor, a telephone, a printer and
shredder. Although some of these items where purchased,
Ms. Johnson was instrumental in getting many of the items
through donations. She recently requested and received
two-way radios to improve communication during emergencies
throughout the school. She also has been the catalyst
behind encouraging more staff members to become aware of and
involved in assisting in health care needs at the school.
As a result of Ms. Johnson's countless emails and telephone
calls, Banneker now has 15 CPR certified employees and at least
ten staff members that have attended AED training. Caring
is the key.
Johnson also initiated
a tracking and educating system for pregnant teens, in
connection with the "Sheltering Arms"
program that will
provide free child care and parenting classes for pregnant teens
that enroll in their program. Caring is the key.
Ms. Johnson was also
one of the nominees for employee of the year for the 2003-2004
school term; and she was assigned by the principal to serve as
Banneker's site coordinator for the AED program. Caring is
the key.
Thanks to Margaret Walker for the information.

WHERE'S WOOT !
Remember that really
nice guy in the 2003-2004 school year that turned into the true
enemy for any opposing team on the football field.
Demarcus Johnson was one of the finest running backs to
ever come out of Banneker High School. Where is he now?
The last we heard of Demarcus he was a freshman at Mississippi
State on a scholarship as a backup running back for the
Bulldogs. Woot did not see much action on the field this
year as a true freshman but talk of a 2 point conversion in one
of the earlier games has been noted. We all miss Woot and
look forward to hearing more about him at Mississippi State in
the next three years to come. Woot if you are out there,
contact us at the link on the left of this page and let us know
how you are doing and what you are up to.

Kindness and Respectfulness do not go unnoticed! ______________________________________________________
I just wanted to share
with you the outstanding complement one of your students
received from my boss
Mr. William Meagher Managing Partner of Nationwide Provident/Revanta
Financial Group. Mr. William Meagher is aware that my son
Edward Dudley attends Banneker High School and he began to ask
me if my son or I knew a student that plays football there by
the name of Chris Bell(wide receiver). He went on to say
he meet the nicest kid and gave Chris high praises for his
kindness and respectfulness he had shown. My boss was so
excited he has Chris's name in his cell phone and gave Chris a
business card.
I share this with you
because, its nice to tell the good positive things that go on
with our young men, and that many are really being young men,
even when we are not around.
