What Does Chemistry, Ecology & Art Have In Common?

Well for one thing the Paper Lady.

Chemistry, Ecology and Art collaborated for three days at Banneker High School.  Her name is Kathy DeMent aka "The Paper Lady".  She is a self taught paper artist who makes her full-time living making art from old paper and junk as well as teaching the art and science of paper making at Metro Atlanta Schools, and throughout the SouthEast.  In the chemistry classes at Banneker she taught students how to make paper out of recycled newspaper, and also out of natural plant fibers.  The students made two types of paper, one from old newsprint and one type from okra.  While studying the art of papermaking the students learned the techniques of collage and of embossing.  In addition to the art of papermaking the students studied the history, technology, and chemistry of papermaking.  Some of the pictures on this page show students lifting the mold out of the vat of pulp slurry.  The students and staff learned a lot and were left with a lot to think about.

A HUGE THANK YOU GOES OUT TO KATHY DEMENT aka "The Paper Lady" and all who made it possible for her to come to Banneker!
