S.I.S.T.E.R.S. History
In September of 1995,
Ms. Linda Abdul-Azeez and a group of young ladies came together
to establish a female group to uplift the spirits of the student
body. It was echoed that an attempt was made earlier to
establish a group called S.I.S.T.E.R.S. in the earlier years of
Banneker High School without success. Mrs. Abdul-Azeez and young
ladies such as Lakeisha Thompson, Latisha Jackson, Dana Baldwin,
and others decided to revive the organization again. The group
asked Mrs. Smiley James to become a sponsor to help get things
started. Through the dedication and perseverance of the sponsors
and twenty-three members the success of S.I.S.T.E.R.S began.
The group was unable
to find the meaning of the S.I.S.T.E.R.S. acronym and decided to
create its own. Sisters Intelligently Striving to Enhance Real
Sisterhood was unanimously accepted. The members chose the
groups colors and created the purpose. With the strong support
of our principal, Dewitt Walker, the group was inspired to offer
tutorial services to the student body, plan family discussions
in a forum type setting for the community, sponsor field trips
and hold sessions for discussion on concerned issues from the
female population at the school.
In 1997, Mrs.
Calloway-West joined the group as a sponsor, after Mrs. Abdul-Azeez
transferred to another school. In 1999, Mrs. Chester-Burton
became the 3rd sponsor because the group had grown
from 23 members to 59. We now have 100 members on roll.
S.I.S.T.E.R.S. is now
an active organization in the community and the school. Members
are selected in September of each year after going through an
interview process. By-laws were established for S.I.S.T.E.R.S.
in 2001. The group caps its membership at 100.
S.I.S.T.E.R.S. was one
of the recipients of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community
Service Award for 2002 and recently was awarded an Outstanding
Service Award from the Roswell North Fulton Community Coalition. We visit Hughes Spalding Hospital yearly
to read to the children, play games with them and leaves
donations of toys and books, volunteer at the Adult Day Center
for Children and Women, feed the homeless at the Open Door
Community, provide tutorial for our girls, etiquette classes and
provide book scholarships for all of our graduating seniors. We
have many other projects during the year. Our S.I.S.T.E.R.S.
Step Team performs at school functions and also compete in
selected competitions.

On November 17th, 2004 the
members of S.I.S.T.E.R.S. volunteered at The Atlanta Day Shelter

clothes in the clothing bank, entertained the children by
playing games with them and singing songs and worked in the
