The Accelerated Reader program at Cogburn Woods helps monitor, motivate and manage student reading practice. This program is currently being used by first through fourth grades.

 Students are tested with the STAR reading test to determine their reading range (ZPD). This range is then shared with the students so they may select the appropriate level books when visiting the school media center or neighborhood library. Research shows that students who practice reading within their appropriate reading ranges strengthen their reading comprehension. Therefore, students are encouraged to read books within their reading range. 

Teachers and students together develop an appropriate reading goal for each goal period. Goals include number of books read (both AR and other selected books) and include a percentage of accuracy expected on the quizzes that are taken.
