CWES Field Trip to the High Museum in Atlanta

Cogburn Woods' Art teachers, Jennifer Barrett and Allison Elder, hosted a field trip to the High Museum of Art.

Westward Ho!

The Fifth Grade TAG classes at Cogburn Woods Elementary presented a play this week on " The Oregon Trail."  Students simulated situations and events similar to those experienced by pioneers who headed west in early wagon trains.  The students faced all kinds of challenges in this unit including snakes, drought, and disease.  Students celebrated the end of their journey with a  presentation for their parents.

Check out What's Happening in Art Classes!

Kindergarten is off to a great start in the art room! They studied pop artist, Andy Warhol.  This kindergartener
has pop art animals in crazy colors and tints!
Third graders had an awesome time trying their hand at sculpture.  The classes used soap to carve a variety of animals form the Northwest.  Fifth graders are studying the art of weaving!  They gained their inspiration from the Tlingit and Haida tribes of the Northwest Coast.  These fifth graders are proud of their burlap weavings!

Cogburn Woods' Students Participate in
Alpharetta's Scarecrow Harvest

The City of Alpharetta invited teachers and students from local elementary schools to celebrate the spirit of the fall season by creating a scarecrow for the 2nd Annual Alpharetta Scarecrow Harvest. The scarecrows from schools were on display on Main Street for residents and businesses throughout Alpharetta. Over a dozen classes and students from Cogburn Woods Elementary entered their scarecrow creations. A huge congratulations goes out to Mrs. Moore's Kindergarten class whose "Thing 1 & Thing 2" scarecrow won "Most Creative". They will be receiving a check for $100 as their prize!

CWES Nature Trail Beautified!

Joe Thorncroft, a senior at St. Francis High School, worked very hard this summer on a very special project.  A Life Boy Scout working on his Eagle project, Joe wanted a project that would be worthwhile and meaningful.  His work paid off in the beautifully restored nature trail at Cogburn Woods Elementary.  Joe designed, painted, and put together a sign, a bench, and spent hours cleaning up and improving the trail.  He included plants that are native to Georgia in the new foliage.

It takes money to rebuild a nature trail and Joe held car washes and asked for donations for his materials.  The other scouts of Troop 69 helped out with the labor.  It took approximately one year for the project to be completed, and the results are wonderful.  Classes from Cogburn Woods can now explore the trail and enjoy studying the natural foliage Joe included.

Joe loves kids and helping them is one of his lifelong goals. It is his hope that everyone at Cogburn Woods, including his sister, Megan, here in fourth grade, will enjoy the nature trail for years to come.
