Question: What are the benefits of the TAG program? Answer: Intellectually gifted and exceptionally creative students have unique learning characteristics, interests, personal needs and capabilities. The Fulton County TAG program addresses these unique characteristics and needs by providing an opportunity for these students to interact with intellectual peers as they participate in classes that extend and enrich the basic curriculum. Question: I have a very bright child and I believe he/she should be in the TAG program. What steps do we take? Answer: Haynes Bridge Middle School follows state and county guidelines to determine TAG eligibility. Although parent input is appreciated, the student must first be identified through the screening process. Once a student has been identified, the Multiple Criteria Team reviews standardized test scores and grades to determine whether or not additional testing is appropriate. Question: My daughter/son has one TAG class this year. How do I get him/her into other TAG classes next year? Answer: In the spring of each year TAG teachers evaluate the performance of each TAG student and conference with teachers to determine continued TAG eligibility and possible serve additions. Depending on this performance evaluation, the TAG department may add one additional serve per year with parental consent. Question: When does screening occur? Answer: The Automatic Screening will take place in August. Students referred for testing will be tested in September—October. All parents will be notified of eligibility by November 2007. The Classroom Screening will take place for a two-week period in January or February. Students referred for testing will be tested January—March. All parents will be notified of eligibility in April. Question: How long is the testing process? Answer: Depending on the age and needs of the student, testing will require 1-5 days of one hour sessions. Once tests are administered, eligibility will be determined and parents notified by the school within 4-6 weeks. Question: If my child were determined eligible, how and when would his/her schedule change? Answer: Once determined eligible, students will begin gifted services in the 1st semester of the school year. Question: What does it mean if my child is placed on TAG probation? Answer: Students must maintain an average of 80% in a TAG class in order to avoid being placed on TAG probation. Parents will be notified in writing if their son or daughter is placed on probation. At the end of the following grading period (i.e., nine weeks), the student’s grades will be reevaluated to determine continued placement in the TAG class. Prior to a dismissal from the TAG class, parents will be notified in writing. |
