Curriculum Highlights
The state of Georgia has revised the Basic Core Curriculum (BCC) and has
adopted the Quality Core Curriculum (QCC). Fulton County has made
revisions using the Continuous Achievement philosophy in the language
arts and math curriculum to include the QCC objectives. The Language
Arts Curriculum was updated in 2003. The Fulton County Board adopted a
new reading series, "'Harcourt Trophies". The Social Studies curriculum
has been updated in Kindergarten through Fifth grades. The Science
curriculum has been updated in grades K-5. The language arts and math
curriculum/assessment programs are being used in grades K-5 this school
year. The Curriculum Specialist will assist in the implementation of the
new curriculum/assessment program.
Each school year we will continue to teach our students based on the
following:
1. the needs of individual students;
2. the Fulton County Curriculum (including the QCC and Fulton County
Objectives);
3. the test of objectives for Georgia Kindergarten Assessment Program,
the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (1-5), Curriculum Based
Assessment and Writing Assessment (3rd and 5th grades), and the Iowa
Test of Basic Skills (2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades).
In the teaching of both reading and math, teachers are expected to group
students into appropriate levels by ability and academic performance. It
is recommended that each classroom teacher have three reading groups and
no less than two math groups. Reading groups for each grade level will
be determined by Harcourt Placement Test. Math groups for each grade
level will be determined by Fulton County math placement test.
All new students to Fulton County will be tested and instructionally
placed in an appropriate group for reading and math by the Curriculum
Specialist. The Curriculum Specialist is always available for assistance
in the area of instruction.
Each school year, special emphasis will be placed on the improvement of
the identified weak skill areas at each grade level that are determined
by the state mandated tests. Weekly scheduled grade level meeting will
be held to discuss strategies to promote student achievement and to
monitor progress.

Core Curriculum
KINDERGARTEN
Children who are five years old on or before September 1st may be
enrolled in our full day kindergarten program. All academic areas are
enhanced in a nurturing climate to stimulate young minds.
MEDIA CENTER
The Media Center is an open media center where a variety of activities
take place daily. There are over 18, 000 print and non-print items in
the media center including the Accelerated Reader collection. Students
are able to use the collection for book circulation, research and quiet
-time reading. Multi-media software is used for accelerated reader as
well as research. The Internet is also available for students and
faculty. Take a look at our Media Center Web Site,
http://randolph-media1/winnebago .
The media specialist cooperatively plans with teachers in adopting
multimedia approaches to instruction as well as creating and recording
video resources for curriculum integration. Educational television
programming is available to the staff and students through cable and
Georgia Public Broadcast.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Students develop strong language arts skills through instruction in
reading, phonics, grammar, spelling, speaking, listening and writing.
MATHEMATICS
A hands-on curriculum is utilized for students to develop math skills
and concepts. Math-manipulative, problem-solving techniques, mental
math, estimation, calculators and computers are emphasized through small
group and individual activities.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Instructional activities are designed to improve fitness, gross and fine
motor skills, and to promote good sportsmanship. All activities are
appropriate for specific developmental ages and grade levels. Students
engage in sports, games, health and fitness in classes with specialists
in our P.E. facility.
Physical Education at Randolph is like “Life”; it can be referred to as
a series of “games.” We help each child learn to perform well in all
roles-as the star, the teammate, the winner, the loser, the offensive,
the defensive - but most of all, they perform in a manner of which he
can be proud.
HEALTH
Curriculum topics include studying areas of mental health, safety, drug
awareness, health habits, nutrition, the human body, and diseases.
SCIENCE
Randolph has a unique Science Lab that brings science alive for all
students in grades K-5. Students report weekly to the lab where they
are able to demonstrate an understanding of their studies through
various lab experiments. Randolph's Science Lab teacher coordinates
with homeroom teachers to further develop students understanding of
science concepts through hands-on explorations. Whether by creating
volcanic eruptions, investigating life cycles, or exploring the wonders
of electricity, students use fascinating lab activities to further
engage in the unique study of science.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Social science concepts and geographic knowledge are included throughout
the instructional program. The curriculum is designed to heighten the
students' awareness of the world and their relationship to it.
TECHNOLOGY
Technology is one of the most vital components of the Instructional
Process. Our Instructional Design Module is adapted to benefit the
needs of the teachers, faculty and staff. Our objective is to
integrate technology into the curriculum through the means of inquiry,
problem-solving, skill building, research and communication. Our
teachers already seamlessly incorporate technology resources into
classroom activities by reinforcing the daily instructional focus and by
engaging students in higher-order thinking skills.
Infrastructure
Randolph has an excellent environment for assimilating technology into
learning. Our school design features computers in every classroom,
school-wide Internet access, and a Computer Lab. Computer assisted
instruction for individual learning in reading, math, language arts,
science, and social studies is available. Whole group instruction is
provided to classes K-5 in the Computer Lab weekly.
We have two technology organizations: Computer Captions and Randolph
Student Technology Organization.
ART
Art education is based on the Discipline Based Art Education (DBAE)
philosophy. This approach integrates the study of art history, art
criticism, and aesthetics, as well as art production. As an elementary
subject, instruction is based on the belief that looking at art, talking
about art, and making art are the essential processes for study by all
students.
The study of art provides opportunities to nourish high level thinking.
When well taught, skills associated with artistic thinking include the
ability to see clearly, analyze, reflect, make judgments, forge
connections among ideas and information and generate new ideas from
diverse sources.
MUSIC
All students, kindergarten through fifth grade, attend music class once
per week for forty-five minutes. Students are taught using a variety of
eclectic approaches including the Orff and Kodaly method to fulfill
national, state and Fulton County Standards for music. The students
work on the six concepts of music each year at a more difficult level.
Students will learn and improve skills in singing, playing instruments,
reading music, moving and dancing to music, creating and writing music
and listening to music. The students use textbooks from “Share the
Music” by McGraw-Hill. In fourth and fifth grade, students have the
opportunity to join band, chorus or orchestra. They may audition for
Randolph Players, an after school dram group that performs musicals and
skits. Grades kindergarten through third have performance
opportunities at scheduled PTA meetings.
BAND
The mission of the band is to assist students in acquiring better
self-discipline and improving group cooperation. Band establishes a
foundation for performance skills on wind or percussion instruments
through consistent drilling on music reading, rhythm counting, hand and
eye coordination and individual instrument techniques as well as
offering performance opportunities.
COUNSELOR
The elementary counselor is a certified trained professional. Ms.
Scott is a school friend who supports children and provides help to
teachers, parents, students and administrators. The counselor also
serves as a liaison with outside agencies. The counselor implements a
developmental guidance and counseling program. The counselor meets
with students individually and in-groups and conducts classroom guidance
activities. The school counselor helps identify individual student
needs. The counselor coordinates the testing program.
Make & Take Workshop Test Taking Skills – Make and Take Workshop is
held in January. Parents receive information on test taking strategies
and how to make games or activities to help with testing skills.
