We will teach children and they will learn. We will take them as far as
they will go, and they will meet their potential. We will create a caring, learning environment, and our students will be motivated to become responsible citizens in our community. |

Harriet Tubman Elementary School opened its doors in August of 1989,
in the building that formerly housed Lakeshore High School Students from Kathleen Mitchell and The Meadows Elementary Schools came together for the first time, forming a new constellation that wove together the divergent histories of two communities. Tubman's teachers hold the basic philosophy that each child is an individual with the potential for greatness, that they are to be treated with respect, and that the history of each child forms the history of the whole. The goal of the Tubman faculty and staff is to meet the children where they are and steer them on a course of academic and moral excellence. To navigate this course, the stars will serve as guides. With their help, we will dream big, reach high, and work diligently. Apart from its personal history, this school carries an American legacy handed down from the late, great Harriet Tubman herself. Born a slave in Bucktown, MD Harriet Tubman grew up to become the most famous leader of the Underground Railroad. Using the stars as her guide, Tubman navigated her way to freedom. Over the course of many years, she made nineteen addtional trips to the south an helped over three hundred slaves find their way to freedom. After the Civil War, Tubman helped raise money for black schools, and was surely struck with the conviction that education brings its own freedom. The faculty and staff at Tubman Elementary share this conviction today.
