WILDCAT NEWS FOR WILSON CREEK FAMILIES

Wilson Creek Wildcats are Responsible

Where Knowledge Flows and Learning Grows”

Text Box: Dear Wilson Creek Family,
This is the first week of sending out the newsletter in a totally wireless format. We did not use one piece
of paper and there are no extra flyers this week.
Next Monday morning, we will gather around the flag pole at 8:15 a.m. for what has become one of my
favorite events here at Wilson Creek. The entire school will join together in the singing of our National
Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. It is so important that students learn the words and the meaning of
this beautiful song along with other famous American documents. With that in mind, we have created a
wall of famous American documents that includes the flag used in last year’s ceremony which actually
flew above the Capitol in Washington D.C.

Planning to travel?  Check this first.
If you are planning to travel during the school year, please review your child’s attendance record first.
Fulton County Schools’ attendance policy can be found online. Fulton County Schools’ attendance policy clearly outlines the accepted excuses for absences and what a parent may do if she/he anticipates an
absence that is not listed.  Please note that in order to have any planned absence excused, a letter from
the parent must be submitted to the principal PRIOR to the planned absence. The principal may or may
not approve the absence.  As well, if your child has missed 10 or more total days of school this year, you
may be asked to provide medical notes for additional absences to be considered excused (in accordance
with Fulton County’s attendance policy). Please reconsider scheduling your family travel/vacation time to
coincide with school breaks and avoid missed class time whenever possible. Thank you for your assistance
in keeping your student in class for instruction.

Fourth Annual National Anthem Project
We would like to invite you to our Fourth Annual National Anthem Project at Wilson Creek Elementary.  Once again the Wildcats of Wilson Creek will gather together at the flagpole and raise our voices to celebrate the writing of our National
Anthem.   The celebration will begin promptly at 8:15 am on Monday, September 14.
Free or Reduced Price Meal Benefits
To continue free or reduced price meal benefits for students each household must complete a new application each year.  Free and Reduced Meal Benefits will end on September 21, 2009,
if the household has not reapplied for SY 2009-2010.  If there is an
interruption in benefits or the household does not reapply, the household is responsible for payment of meals until the Free
and Reduced Application is approved.
To help assure continuation of benefits, the household must have a new
application turned in to the school cafeteria manager before September 16, 2009.  Be sure to list all the students in the household on the application.
Keep in mind, the application may take up to 10 days to process.  If you have any questions, please call the Fulton County School Nutrition Program-Meal Eligibility Desk at 404-305-2220.

Book Fair Chair Needed
We are looking for someone to chair our Book Fair this year!  This year the book fair is from November 2 - 6.  If you are
interested, please contact Kelly Upton, VP Academic Services, at
supton6662@aol.com.

Evergreen School Plaque
Have you noticed the new “Evergreen School” sign at the entrance to our school?  We’re excited to be recognized by
“Keep Johns Creek Beautiful” with this distinction.  We received the plaque after fulfilling the goals set last year to
raise environmental awareness at our school.  Most notable was the paper recycling program implemented last year.  Please look for more information about a school-wide recycling program we hope to roll out very soon.  Great job Green Team!!

Nike Reuse-A-Shoe Recycling
Does your family have athletic shoes they’ve outgrown or worn out?  Please bring them to our school during September
25 – October 2 (same week as the coat drive).  We will be making a donation to Nike.  They take any brand athletic shoe
and break them down to be re-used for athletic surfaces like running tracks and basketball courts.  See
www.nikereuseashoe.com for more details.  Any size and brand of athletic shoe will be accepted except for cleats or shoes with metal spikes.  Look for the box in the atrium outside the cafeteria.  Any questions, e-mail Jennifer Braynard at braynards@bellsouth.net.
