Hello! I am the Media Specialist for Independence High School. Students and teachers often ask me, “What’s the difference between a librarian and a media specialist?” When I started my career, I was truly a librarian, a cataloger and keeper of books. (The origin of the word “library” is libr—Latin for book.) Libraries today house much more than books. Consider audiobooks, DVD’s, CD’s, computer files & databases, equipment. So now, I delve in all types of media. . . but, I do not claim to be a “specialist” in all of them. My job is to help students and teachers locate the resources they need to master and enrich school curriculum. I purchase books and media (there’s that word again) that support classroom learning. Also, I provide hands-on instruction to students working on assignments, directing them to the most reliable research databases and resources. My goal is to promote a love of literature and reading at every opportunity. I actively search for new books that “speak” to teens about their challenges, hopes, and visions of the future. My mission is to make the Media Center a warm and inviting place that students will want to visit often for personal reading or academic research. |
