Course Description: This course satisfies the State of Georgia requirement for high school graduation in World History. It is also a college level course that will culminate in the AP exam on May 15th, 2008. In this semester we will cover mankind’s global history from 8000 B.C.E. until post Columbian Exchange Era Trade (c. 1600 C.E.) This course is rigorous and includes not only an enormous amount of factual information, but also extensive writing and critical thinking activities. Our textbook will be The Earth and Its Peoples, AP Edition by Bulliet, et al. Requirements:
Grading Policy: Each test or assignment will be given a numerical grade (e.g., 18 out of 20) and will also be divided into one of four weighted categories. Tests and Projects are worth 40%, Class Work/Discussion Questions are 20%, and Free Response Questions are worth 25%. The Final Exam is 15%. Recovery: In the event that a student’s cumulative grade has fallen below a 74, and IF the student has completed all work required and had acceptable attendance, that student is eligible for a recovery opportunity designed by the teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to request recovery and all recovery work must be completed ten days before the end of the semester. Honor Code: As explained in the student handbook, cheating is defined as “the giving or receiving, in any form, information relating to a gradable experience.” Violations of the honor code will result in a zero for the assignment, plus an honor code violation form placed in the student’s disciplinary file. Read the handbook carefully to fully understand what constitutes a violation. Homework, Make-Up Work, and Late Work: Homework should be turned in to the “In Box” for your class period. I do not accept late work. If a student has an excused absence, that student may make up the work with no penalty, provided that the student brings in a note from the office within 2 days of the absence. The student has as many days as he or she was absent to complete the work. You will need to consult your study group for missed assignments when you are absent. Do not ask me unless it was test day. Class Expectations/Rules: Be Prompt (tardies are not acceptable—see page 16 of the student handbook) Be Prepared (always have paper, writing utensil, your book, and your binder) Be Respectful (respect others, their property, and yourself—conduct yourself well) Be Responsible (no excuses for lost/missing work or not studying for a test) Units of Study There are five major time periods of study for AP World History. They are:
