Subjects of Interest
In READING and LANGUAGE ARTS, we have been working very hard reviewing already learned skills and learning new skills. We have learned more about fiction/non-fiction, singular and plural nouns, summarizing, and identifying the main idea. In phonics and spelling, we have been working on /ide/ and /id/ spelling patterns as well as past tense verbs. For the spelling test on Fridays, the students will be responsible for the 15 words sent home in their homework packet along with 5 additional words that have a spelling pattern from a previous week.
Please encourage your child to read ALOUD to you for 20 minutes each night.
WRITING has been an area of focus. We started by writing about our families. Since then we have focused on writing complete sentences, learning about the different types of sentences, and how to effectively use an organizer when writing a paragraph.
MATH is another subject where we have learned a lot. We started the year with a unit on place value. We used manipulatives to model 3 and 4 digit numbers, learned how to expand numbers, as well as understanding the value of various place values. We also practiced comparing numbers and creating the greatest and least number possible.
We will not spend a lot of time on reviewing basic facts this year. Please practice basic addition and subtraction facts to 20 with your child on a daily basis. Your child should be able to provide the answer to basic facts without using their fingers and by responding within a few seconds.
SOCIAL STUDIES has been a subject of exciting discovery. We learned all about where we live. We also learned about Georgia’s five regions as well as its major rivers. Please continue to practice writing your child’s address. We will learn about the discovery of Georgia in our next unit.
In HEALTH, we learned about how to be a good friend as well as making good choices and showing respect.
Our first SCIENCE unit will be about Stars.
Technology Connection
We will visited the computer lab to learn about rules and expectations this week. We will also take the STAR test in order to find out each child’s reading level for checking out books and taking AR tests. AR will begin September 8.
Absences
If your child is absent from school due to illness, a religious holiday, or another reason, please send a note regarding the absence when your child returns to school. Please do not write it in the Communication Journal but instead on a separate piece of paper
A Note from the
Desk of Mrs. Ducray
What a terrific start we’ve had to our 2nd grade year! We are getting use to our daily routine, our class and individual expectations, and our class work expectations.
The children have been making new friends and renewing old friendships. We’re learning so much about each other!
I look forward to seeing you on Curriculum Night, Wednesday, September 3, and sharing our curriculum as well as daily routines in second grade with you. We will begin at 7:00 PM. Special volunteer opportunities such as Mystery Guest Reader, ACORNS, and Estimation Station will be discussed.
Please remember to send a healthy snack to school with your child each day. It is helpful if you label your child’s snack with his or her name in case another child has the same snack.
I would like to thank our room parents for volunteering to be our room parents. A special thanks to our volunteer parent for organizing our class basket for Family Fun Night. Thank you to everyone who has offered to volunteer their time!
Sign and return papers will be sent home every two weeks. Please review the papers with your child and correct any mistakes together. Please return all of the sign and return papers along with the signed cover sheet to school the next day. If you need an additional day or two, please let me know by writing a note in the communication journal.
I am really enjoying working with each of your children each week, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to either email me or to write me a note in the communication journal.
