Online Essay Scoring Resources
From On Target Online Presentation.

The resources below have been created by Greg Ott for use with his students when they write to prompts that will be scored using  the Online Essay Scoring System offered by through our textbook agreement with Holt.  Teachers visiting this site are welcome to download and modify these handouts for use in their own classrooms.  These handouts can provide a framework for using the system and can be customized for individual conditions and expectations.  Greg always appreciates hearing from teachers who find these materials useful. Contact information can be found at the bottom of this page.

Resource Handouts for The Dinner Party
Literary Analysis Essay.  This prompt can be found by accessing the Writing About Literature prompts.

The handouts below are used as students develop their responses to  The Dinner Party in the Writing About Literature section of the Online Essay Scoring System.  I post most of them on my website as students use them in the development of their essays.  This enables them to print out additional copies of everything they have been handed or have worked on in class.

their papers.

Student Model For Scoring Practice
Students use this student written piece to practice the use
of the rubrics for scoring.  The paper is then run through
the online scoring system to compare with the student's
view of it.  This works well in a collaborative setting.

Student Models Written in response to  Under the Rice Moon

This story was used in class to model the Online Essay scoring process.  The examples below demonstrate student responses to the story representing three different scoring levels for revisions written in response to the feedback generated by the model "2" paper.  Students may find that examining the evolution of this paper towards a score of "4" may help them revise their own papers on The Dinner Party.  This process can be duplicated for any of the online essay prompts.

Read Under the Rice Moon by Rhiannon Puck.

Student Model Response - Score 2
Students examine this paper and use the Evaluations Rubrics to score it and generate recommendations for improvement.  This gives them experience using feedback that will be generated by the submissions of their own papers.  The paper is then copied into the scoring system for the related prompt to let the students see how the system works and to compare how the system viewed the paper to their own view of the response. (Remove the checks and the Score before using with students)

Student Model Response - Score 3
Students examine the revision and highlight improvements that have been made.  Students should then rescore the revision before it too is entered into the system and scored.  Discuss whether or not the revision addressed concerns that students noted in the original, and discuss additional needs that could improve the paper even more.
(Remove the checks and the Score before using with students)

Student Model Response - Score 4
Repeat the process above with the final version of the paper.  Emphasize the difference between each paper and how much revision is actually represented within each submission. Students need to recognize that a significant amount of time needs to be spent responding to the first submission of their own papers if they plan on actually improving their scores.  Once Again....(Remove the checks and the Score before using with students)

Persuasive Essay Handouts
Many of the handouts for the Writing About Lit paper on the left can be modified to serve this paper.  The handouts above used for modeling the use of the online feedback can be easily modified for this paper by simply inserting a persuasive essay that is modified to  score at the three levels.
