Geobot – Math Unit 5 Project

The Task

An engineering company has offered $100,000 for the best design of a robot made of a variety of geometric shapes and figures, so it is to be classified as a “Geobot”. You have been asked to submit an original design to be considered for selection. Your design should have more than 4 shapes. You are creating a blueprint and a scale model that will be used for judging and manufacturing the “Geobot.”

Steps for completing the task:

  1. Draw sketches of your “Geobot” showing various views (front, side, back, top). Be sure to include a large variety of geometric shapes (at least 4).
  2. Write a detailed description of your “Geobot” that includes all of the geometric parts and where they are located on the robot (Engineers call this kind of description “Specs”). Include in this description an estimate of the surface area and volume of your completed “Geobot”.  You may also write a few sentences about what your Geobot does.
  3. Build a scale model of your “Geobot” according to your specifications. Assign a number to and label each part of your “Geobot” with the dimensions of that part (surface area and volume must be included also dimensions such as length, width, height, radius or diameter of base should be included depending on shape).
  4. Record information about your “Geobot” on table provided.
  5. The engineering company needs to know how much material will be needed to make your “Geobot”. Use Column 4 to the surface area of each of the parts of the “Geobot”.
  6. The inside of your “Geobot” will house various wires and electrical materials. It is necessary for the engineering company to know the volume of each part to know if there is enough space for these items. In the 3rd column of the table record the volume of each of the parts.
  7. Make a poster that includes a 3-D model, your sketches, your specs, and the table. Remember that you want them to pick your “Geobot”, so make your poster impressive.

The Geobot Project is due on Monday, April 16, 2007. This project will count as a test/major project grade, so please show us your best work. Rubric must be turned in along with project in order to receive full credit.
