Description Essay Assignment

Review Chapter 4 of The Compact Reader for the writing mode of Description. 

Then, turn to page 85 of your book to find a list of 30 ideas for writing a description essay.  Choose one (or one suggested by that list – your choice) and write an essay developed by description.  Remember, like the essays featured in the book, the description essay is a way to convey an idea – i.e., your essay should have an argument.  It is not intended to be pure description like one might find in a lab report.

Your essay needs to be typed, double spaces and 500-750 words – papers longer than three pages will be penalized a letter grade.  REVISE – select, excise things that are superfluous.  (Now…look up excise and superfluous).

You need to bring a complete rough draft to class on Monday.  Final drafts will be due on Thursday, October 15^th and you will be required to submit it via turnitin.com (or you will lose 10 points)

The fine print:

• This will count as a major writing grade (100 points)
• Papers not double-spaced, typed will lose 10 points.
• You are required to turn in all drafts and prewriting.
• Papers are DUE on Thursday; papers turned in Friday will lose 20 points and I will not accept papers after that time.  You will get a zero.

If you do a good job on this paper, it should help bring up some of those lower writing grades (i.e., summer reading assignments)...
