 What is in a Name?

This is an assignment for my Ninth graders studying Romeo and Juliet.

Day

Assignment

Monday:  Thoughts about your name First:  Talk to your parents and ask them why
           they chose to name you what they did
Second:  Do this for both your first, middle,
           and last name
Wednesday:  Now research on the internet
         what your first, middle and last names
          really mean.
Go to the websites listed at the left to help
           you with your search and below:
           last-names.net/
           zelo.com/firstnames/index.asp
Friday:  Display these findings in an artistic
             manner
Take your first, middle and last names and
          taking a 13x18 poster board
         arrange what you have found about
         your name.  Make this an aesthetic
         collage with sufficient insight for your
         names
Monday:  Make an in class presentation of
                your findings
Displaying your project on the posterboard,
        present it to the class
On Final Exam Day Turn in a heritage/ego poem developed
        from this project following the criteria
        presented below

HERITAGE/EGO POEM

You are to write a poem celebrating your heritage and yourself, the product of that heritage.

The poem must be typed and the criteria highlighted in different markers to show
what they are and match a legend on the cover sheet.  You have done this before. 
rest is up to you.

The poem must contain the following:

                  Your name
                An adjective describing your last name
                The country of your origin/nationality
                Written in First person
                Language of origin
                Tell your best feature
                Something about your personality
                Something inherited from an ancestor
                Mention one specific ancestor
                One experience from your youth that was meaningful
                Three items about your life
                Future/wishes/hopes

                Must make sense and flow together
                Maybe difficulties, failures, joys, triumphs
                Can discuss ancestors more than an ego poem about you,-your call
 

These poetic terms must be shown:
                      1 allusion
                   2 similes and/or metaphors
                   1 personification

                Does not have to have a rhyme scheme, but it can rhyme
                Can be done in rap form

DUE:  Friday, May 13, 2005.
