   Nickel Economy

  • The children will receive nickels, with the assumption that they will do their jobs as learners so that I can do mine as the teacher!  The children will save up their nickels and cash them in for their desired rewards.

  • Children will lose nickels if they repeatedly violate proper classroom behavior that hinders the learning process.

  • This will not only teach responsibility, but they will also be learning some very important money and budgeting skills.

Every Friday morning, parent volunteers help us with the Nickel Store. Each student can save their nickels or spend them as follows:

    2 nickels (10 cents) = sticker
4 nickels (20 cents) = piece of candy
6 nickels (30 cents) = free computer time
8 nickels (40 cents) = bring a book to share
    10 nickels (50 cents) = share time
12 nickels  (60 cents) = sit at Miss Wade’s desk
    14 nickels  (70 cents) = homework pass/ 1 day’s worth
16 nickels (80 cents) = Free Center Time
    18 nickels (90 cents) = buy a book
    20 nickels ($1.00) = treasure box

Lunch (11:20 - 11:50) and Snack

  • Please put money for lunch in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and my name.

  • Snack will be in the morning.  Please provide a healthy snack for your child each day that they can open independently.

  Birthdays

As noted in the school handbook, birthday treats are to be passed out during lunch time. Please do not send birthday invitations for your child to pass out. This helps to avoid hurt feelings among classmates.

Absences

If your child is absent due to a sickness, please send a note when he/she returns in order for the absence to be excused. Make-up work for the day(s) missed will be sent home. It is to your child's benefit to make-up missed work.

Agenda

The agenda is a great communication tool. Your child will write weekly spelling words and a daily message in the agenda.  I may also write notes to you and you may communicate small notes to me as well. It is important to read and sign the agenda daily. Please do not send transportation changes in the agenda.

  Blue Take Home Folder

Along with the agenda, your child will have a blue Take Home Folder that will come home and needs to be brought back to school everyday. Important notes, lunch money, papers done in class, and forms not sent in the Thursday Folders will be sent home in blue folders. Every Monday, homework will be sent in the blue folder and will need to be completed and  returned in the blue folder on Friday.

Homework

A homework sheet will be sent home every Monday. Read the homework for the appropriate night.  Select to do the regular homework or the challenge homework.  After your child completes the day’s homework, sign to verify that the homework was completed.  Return all homework back to your child’s teacher on Friday.

Remember that homework is primarily given to practice skills and instill responsibility in your 1st grader. Please use discretion while working on the homework with your child. We want your child to be challenged but at the same time feel successful. Have your child work at their ability.

Colorful Classmate of the Week

Each child in our class is special in many ways and we want to learn more!  Each student will have the opportunity to be "Colorful Classmate of the Week." Your child will create a poster all about him/her self to share with the class. The poster will be displayed on a bulletin board titled, "___________ colors our class because..." More information will be sent home on your child's special week.
